Wine country of Upper Međimurje
It is a common belief worldwide that there’s a particular magic that clings to the vine and the land it inhabits. Wine-growing folks are simply different from the rest, and so are the people living in the hills of Upper Međimurje, especially in the Štrigova area. Its scenery with stunning panorama leaves an imprint on those who live here, and even more so on those just passing through. Rolling vineyards adorn nearly every hillside and take your breath away in every season. Many are sheltered by forests and groves, by meadows and orchards, or by the first homes in numerous villages and hamlets with local people who give a deeper meaning to everything that surrounds them.

The vineyards are the star attraction in Upper Međimurje. To get there, you just have to follow the road northwards, from Čakovec to Štrigova. The first vines appear after passing the village of Lopatinec, extending towards Selnica, multiplying further on towards Štrigova and the Slovenian border. At the farthest edge lies the hamlet of Banfi. Within this small area, the vineyards cover about 1,100 hectares of land. The wine-bearing hills rise to 340 meters of altitude. Its continental climate is characterized by cold winters, warm summers, and a high average humidity. In such conditions, certain micro-locations yield wines of international acclaim. Among the finest are the vineyards in Sveti Urban, Železna Gora, Banfi, Prekopa, and Dragoslavec.

“ Lose your way in nature — and you just might find yourself.”

The Lovrec plane trees
Two gigantic plane trees, over three centuries old, grow on the estate of the Lovrec winemaking family, on the slopes of Sveti Urban. The two protected natural monuments provide shelter for birds in their vast canopies, and a cool shade for the wine salon in the grass below.

Dragon’s Garden
Dragon's Garden (Cro. Zmajev vrt) in Železna Gora is a unique gem of botany and art. Cedars, cryptomerias, sequoias, laurels, Judas trees, smoke trees, and other continental species grow on its gentle slopes. A series of themed sections intertwine in the garden, with unique, mostly ceramic, art sculptures made by the artistic duo Keramos-Valkaj exhibited in the midst of it. There is also a summer stage, a sculptural structure, designed for classical music concerts.
